Emerald Ash Borer
Treatment and Prevention
The Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive beetle that is destroying ash trees across Colorado.

Identification
Early identification of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is critical for effective management. Look for signs such as thinning canopy, D-shaped exit holes (about 1/8 inch wide) on the bark, S-shaped tunnels (galleries) beneath the bark (if peeled back), and increased woodpecker activity as they feed on larvae. Stressed ash trees may also produce new shoots (epicormic sprouts) from the trunk or base, or exhibit vertical bark splitting.
Treatment
Treatment for EAB typically involves the application of systemic insecticides, often delivered via trunk injections. These treatments move throughout the tree to kill the feeding larvae. The effectiveness of treatment depends on the tree's health and the severity of the infestation, with healthy trees showing early symptoms having the best chance of recovery. Treatments usually need to be repeated every 1-3 years our a certified arborists, like for continued protection.
Prevention
The most effective way to prevent EAB infestation is through proactive measures. This includes choosing healthy ash trees, proper planting and care to minimize stress, and avoiding the movement of firewood, which is a primary way EAB spreads to new areas. In areas where EAB is present or imminent, preventative insecticide treatments applied to healthy ash trees can provide long-term protection, making these valuable trees less susceptible to attack.
